Altay Bayindir, a Manchester United target, was granted the opportunity to join the field and say goodbye to Fenerbahce fans before the Turkish club’s Conference League qualifier against FC Twente. Bayindir was in Athens, Greece, earlier this week for a pre-medical assessment, during which United staff checked on a recent back injury as they considered a swoop for the 25-year-old.
Bayindir then returned to Istanbul as United considered whether to proceed with the transaction.
But, as Bayindir bid an emotional farewell to Fenerbahce on Thursday evening, it appears like they are ready to press the button.
Bayindir entering the ground ahead of kick-off to say goodbye to supporters inside a crowded Sukru Saracoglu Stadium has been captured on video from the stands.
He can be seen praising each stand as fans yelled his name passionately before exiting the pitch quickly.
The video suggests that a deal is now imminent, and if so, Bayindir will be expected to undergo a second physical in Manchester prior to the transfer.
United is said to be willing to pay an initial fee of £4.5 million, which could increase to £6 million with add-ons.
This summer, Erik ten Hag’s team examined additional options, including Benfica’s Odysseas Vlachodimos.
Despite United’s interest, the Greek international is anticipated to remain in Lisbon.
The Red Devils are prepared for Dean Henderson’s departure as the England international nears the conclusion of his contract.
Crystal Palace have joined Nottingham Forest in the race for his signature in the last ten days.
Henderson spent the season on loan at Nottingham Forest before suffering a season-ending injury.
Forest is still interested, but Arsenal has signed USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner.
Sheffield United are also rumoured to be interested in re-signing Henderson, who spent two seasons at Bramall Lane previously.
If Bayindir arrives, he will be the club’s fourth summer signing, following Mason Mount, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund.
Jonny Evans is also expected to sign a one-year deal at Old Trafford on a free transfer.
United are now concentrating their efforts on outgoings, which might influence whether or not any other additions arrive before the September 1 transfer deadline.
