De Gea, who is out of contract in a few weeks, was said to have ‘signed a new agreement’ about a month ago.
However, this ostensibly new deal has yet to be announced. United had the option of automatically extending De Gea’s contract until 2024 on the same terms but instead forced him to accept a wage cut.
De Gea has been chastised over the last year, but Erik ten Hag has remained confident in him.
The 32-year-old recently received a substantial offer from Saudi Arabia, and it has been reported that United is investigating Porto goalkeeper Diogo Dalot as a possible long-term replacement.
McCarthy, who took over as United’s first-team coach last summer, believes the club would be unwise to allow De Gea to depart this summer.
“In the league, he had 17 clean sheets.” Of course, you’re going to concede, but winning the Golden Glove for the second time in a row is incredible,” McCarthy told 947 Joburg.
“You see how difficult the league is, so I understand that everyone has a bad game now and then, but that doesn’t take away from him being one of the best goalkeepers I’ve seen and worked with.” He’s incredible.
“I work with him every day, and I get to see more firsthand than most people do.” You only see him on Saturdays or matchdays, and when he makes a mistake, the critics scream.
“However, I get to spend every single day with him, and he is an incredible guy, a great lad, very intelligent, and one of the best goalkeepers I’ve ever seen.” It would be a heinous crime for Manchester United to lose a goalkeeper like David de Gea.”
Ten Hag admitted last month that De Gea might not be his “always” number one goalkeeper.
“If you look at the biggest teams, you have to be able to play from the back and use your ‘keeper as a plus one in your back, because otherwise, it’s straightforward for opponents to put you under pressure.” He [De Gea] has to take the initiative. He demonstrated progression in a number of games.”
When asked if De Gea would be back at Manchester United next season, he replied, “Yes, but I won’t say he’ll always be my No. 1 because, in a club like Man United, there must be competition in all positions.”
“It can’t be done with 11 players.” It is not possible. You require two positions.”
