Greenwood, 21, has not played in the NFL since his arrest in January 2022. Charges against the forward for attempted rape, participating in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault causing actual bodily harm were dropped seven months ago.
Following the conclusion of Greenwood’s criminal case, United stated that he will not be returning to the club in August. The player had inked a season-long loan deal with Getafe before of Friday’s 11 p.m. transfer deadline.
The club is presently 12th in Spain’s top flight, with an away match against leaders Real Madrid on Saturday. Greenwood, on the other hand, will not be a part of that game.
“Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance,” United said in a statement. Greenwood can now begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.”
The club’s executives also promised to keep in touch with the one-cap England international, saying, “The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”
Greenwood appeared to be on his way to Lazio when the Serie A club initiated talks with United. However, a transaction did not materialize, prompting Getafe to capitalize, saying on their official Twitter account, “Mason Greenwood new blue footballer.”
Despite Scott McTominay being extensively linked with a move, Greenwood was the most notable departure for United manager Erik ten Hag on Friday. But the midfielder stayed after Fulham dropped their interest because Joao Palhinha’s projected move to Bayern Munich fell through.
Four players arrived at Carrington, with Sofyan Amrabat joining on loan from Fiorentina after a summer search. Sergio Reguilon joined on a season-long loan, and Jonny Evans re-signed after pre-season training with the club.
Altay Bayindir completed his £4.3 million move from Turkish club Fenerbahce. This follows the departure of Dean Henderson, who transferred to Crystal Palace for a cost of £15 million earlier this week.
