Who exactly is Goncalo Inacio?
Despite Sporting’s problems this season – they finished fourth, their lowest place since the defender came into the first team – Inacio has remained an important member of the squad. Despite playing in the club’s backline, he appeared in 33 league games and contributed one goal and three assists.
His statistics this season have again emphasized his abilities, despite his club’s failings in the Portuguese Liga. When compared to other players in his position in the Men’s ‘Next 8’ competitions (leagues other than the Premier League, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, La Liga, or Serie A), he is one of the greatest.
His 9.04 progressive passes per 90 put him in the top 1% of all center-backs, and his 1.90 progressive carries put him in the top 3% as well. It demonstrates that, in addition to being a competent defender (as evidenced by his 1.71 interceptions and 1.48 tackles per 90), he is capable of taking the ball himself and being more offensive, launching attacks and pulling his team forward.
These showings have now sparked curiosity from afar. According to O Jogo through Sport Witness, Newcastle, and Manchester United are among the Premier League clubs interested in signing Inacio this summer. A deal would not break the bank for either club, with a release clause of 45 million Euros (or £38 million), but Sporting is eager to extend his contract and boost his clause.
It is then reported that he has bristled at Newcastle’s approach but has not had the same reaction when it comes to United, implying that he is open to joining and even favors a move to Old Trafford.
Should Manchester United pursue Inacio?
Those who are unfamiliar with the center-back should be aware that he is considered as one of the most promising young prospects in his position. This is demonstrated by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who describes him as a “complete” center-back and calls him “Alcochete’s finest.”
As previously noted, his statistics support this. He is regarded as one of the finest in his position across a wide range of leagues and players, with both his offensive and defensive production standing out. With 0.87 dribblers tackled per 90, he ranks in the 85th percentile and demonstrates his ability to follow and stop runners, while his 5.89 ball recoveries rank highly, placing him in the top 26%.
Inacio is still young, but he has already demonstrated a lot of raw talent – and he surely has what it takes to move up to the bright lights of a club like United, having been commended by his prior coaches for his superior psychological attributes.
