Manchester United’s Antony Returns to Old Trafford, Eager to Play Again
Manchester United winger Antony expressed his delight at being back at Old Trafford despite his team’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. The 23-year-old Brazilian was in attendance at the stadium on Saturday, marking his return after taking a leave of absence during the international break.
Antony had voluntarily met with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) to address allegations of abuse made against him in Brazil, which he strongly denies. United announced his return to the squad on Friday, and he arrived at Carrington on Saturday morning before heading to Old Trafford.
On his Instagram story, Antony shared two pictures of himself outside the iconic ground with the caption: “Good to be back!!”
Although he couldn’t participate in Saturday’s match, Antony is expected to rejoin the squad for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Galatasaray. Manager Erik ten Hag expressed confidence in Antony’s fitness, despite his period of absence.
The decision to reintegrate Antony into the squad follows discussions with GMP. The club emphasized that Antony had not been arrested, detained, or charged in connection with the allegations.
Manchester United issued a statement, stating: “As Antony’s employer, Manchester United has decided that he will resume training at Carrington and be available for selection while police inquiries proceed. This will be kept under review pending further developments in the case.
“As a club, we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognize the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”
