David De Gea’s Name Resurfaces on Social Media Amid Manchester United’s Defeat
David De Gea’s name has resurfaced on social media following Manchester United’s fifth defeat in seven games, which saw Erik ten Hag’s side lose to Super Lig outfit Galatasaray.
Galatasaray secured their first-ever win on English soil, coming from behind on two occasions to seal the victory.
During the final 20 minutes of the match, United’s performance unraveled, with several players, including Andre Onana, Raphael Varane, Sofyan Amrabat, and Casemiro, making mistakes that contributed to a disappointing evening at Old Trafford.
Casemiro conceded a penalty in the 77th minute, leading to his second yellow card after a misplaced pass by Onana.
Although Onana watched Mauro Icardi missed a penalty from 12 yards, the Argentine eventually found the net, raising questions about the Cameroonian goalkeeper’s positioning for the goal.
In response to Onana’s performance against Galatasaray, former United goalkeeper David De Gea began trending on social media.
One fan suggested, “David De Gea deserves a statue outside Old Trafford for the way he kept Manchester United in the game over and over again,” while another apologized to De Gea on behalf of United fans.
Another comment read, “If Ten Hag claims he’s ruthless and can axe club legends like Ronaldo and De Gea, then he should have the guts to bench Onana in our upcoming matches. We’ve seen enough already.”
A fourth comment expressed, “Getting rid of De Gea and Henderson and bringing in Onana and Bayindir might be the biggest downgrade in the history of Manchester United.”
David De Gea left Manchester United in July after failing to reach a new contract agreement, concluding his 12-year tenure at the club.
De Gea cited a desire for a new challenge and to “push myself again in new surroundings” as the reason for his departure. However, he remains a free agent.
In an emotional farewell message to United fans on his social media platforms, De Gea expressed his gratitude for the support he received during his time at the club.
