Manchester United fans were quick to spot an unconventional “match-winning” assist from Alejandro Garnacho in the remarkable penalty save by Andre Onana.
On Wednesday night at Old Trafford, Manchester United secured a 1-0 victory over Copenhagen, with Harry Maguire netting a brilliant goal.
However, it was Onana who stole the spotlight when he pulled off a spectacular save during injury time, denying the Danish side a late equalizer.
Eagle-eyed fans didn’t miss the role played by Alejandro Garnacho in this extraordinary moment.
Upon reviewing the footage, it became apparent that the young forward had tampered with the penalty spot while the other players engaged in discussions with the referee about the penalty decision.
One enthusiastic supporter took to Twitter, exclaiming, ‘GARNACHO WHERE DO YOU WANT YOUR STATUE?’
Another fan had this to say, ‘I must admit, I respect what Garnacho did.’ Yet another supporter quipped, ‘Oh dear, Garnacho, I’ll be your fan for life.’
Curiously, the Copenhagen manager, Jacob Neestrup, remained oblivious to Garnacho’s ‘assist’ in his post-match comments.
However, some have pointed out that the 19-year-old’s actions may have had minimal impact on the outcome, as Jordan Larsson’s spot-kick was on target and still required a heroic save from Onana.
One fan on Twitter asserted, ‘The penalty was struck cleanly, it was simply poorly placed. The spot had nothing to do with it.’
Another fan concurred, stating, ‘Scuffing the spot didn’t make him miss; let’s not blow it out of proportion.’
Nonetheless, no one could take away the well-deserved recognition from Onana for his incredible performance.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper, however, modestly downplayed his heroics, stating, ‘I’m just doing my job, and the most important thing is securing a victory against a formidable opponent.’
