Three stars sideline, two new faces included – Manchester United confirm Europa League squad

Erik ten Hag has named a 25-man squad for Manchester United's Europa League campaign.

Phil Jones and Brandon Williams have been left out of Manchester United’s Europa League group stage squad.

Jones, 30, has appeared in two games in the last two years and has been sidelined due to injury since United players returned for pre-season training on June 27.

Jones has started eight games for United since being handed a four-year contract in February 2019, and he is now in the last year of his contract.

United has the option to extend Jones’ contract for another year, but they are unlikely to do so due to his lack of playing time.

Williams, 22, spent last season on loan at Norwich and has been sidelined by injury for United manager Erik ten Hag.

Axel Tuanzebe and Facundo Pellistri, who are both currently injured, have been named to the 25-man roster.

Anthony Elanga is not listed by United since his age qualifies him for the B list.

“A player may be registered on List B if he was born on or after 1 January 2001 and has been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years since his 15th birthday by the time he is registered with UEFA – or for a total of three consecutive years with a maximum of one loan period to a club from the same association for a period not longer than one year,” according to UEFA rules.

“Players under the age of 16 may be submitted if they have been registered with the club without interruption for the preceding two years.”

All six summer signings are eligible for selection for United’s first group game against Real Sociedad on Thursday at Old Trafford.

United has also been drawn against Cypriot club Omonia FC and Moldovan club FC Sheriff.

Van Gea, Heaton, Dubravka, Dalot, Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Martinez, Maguire, Lindelof, Tuanzebe, Malacia, Shaw, Casemiro, McTominay, Fred, Eriksen, Van de Beek, Fernandes, Pellistri, Antony, Rashford, Sancho, Martial, Ronaldo, Garnacho are the Manchester United Europa League squad.
