Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes believes the referee made the correct decision by refusing to award Wolverhampton Wanderers a late penalty.
United won all three points in their first Premier League match at Old Trafford.
Raphael Varane’s headed goal was enough for the Red Devils to defeat Gary O’Neill’s side.
A cross soared into the United box late in the game and was challenged in the air by two Wolves players. Onana dashed off his line to get the ball and collided with one of them.
Despite the opposition’s loud complaints, the on-field referee did not instantly issue a penalty. VAR supported this decision even more.
Fernandes was questioned about the issue by the media after the game.
“It’s the way the referee sees it,” he explained. If Onana hits him with his hands, he could face a penalty. “I believe the subsequent contact was quite normal.”
“From my perspective, it was not a penalty, but Wolves will always claim it was. It is dependent on what the referee says.”
“Wolves have quality, a good team,” the Portuguese added. They played differently under their new boss, more like Bournemouth did last season. We did well to recover some balls on the way to press, but we should have done better.”
He stated that in the future, United must learn to adjust to every passing situation on the field rather than rigidly following the manager’s strategy.
Fernandes noted that while it was not “the perfect game” from his perspective, he was more than satisfied with the points he was able to accumulate.
According to the 28-year-old, it is critical that the season get off to a good start in order to generate momentum early on.
