Manchester United Considered Joao Felix Before Summer Signing
Manchester United engaged in discussions with superstar forward Joao Felix before the player realized his ‘dream’ summer move. The Red Devils were keen to bolster their attacking options during the summer transfer window, culminating in the acquisition of Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for £72 million.
According to former Portuguese international Paulo Futre, Jorge Mendes, the renowned football agent, initiated talks with Manchester United to explore the possibility of bringing Joao Felix to Old Trafford. Felix, who also reportedly attracted interest from Liverpool, expressed his aspiration to play for Barcelona, creating a dilemma for Mendes.
Futre shared, “When Joao said he dreamed of playing for Barca, I began to live a nightmare that lasts to this day.” Futre contacted Mendes to discuss the situation, accusing Mendes of influencing Felix’s statements. Mendes confirmed that he had indeed spoken to Manchester United about the player.
Erik ten Hag, United’s manager, had been eyeing another attacking addition even after signing Hojlund, seeking a versatile forward capable of playing across the front line. Ultimately, Joao Felix fulfilled his dream by joining Barcelona on a season-long loan deal.
The 23-year-old forward has enjoyed a strong start to the season, scoring three goals in five games across all competitions. This comes after a less successful stint at Atletico Madrid following his £113 million transfer from Benfica in 2019.
