WATCH – Lionel Messi produces “craziest” assist to Neymar as PSG pair combine to score incredible goal
Paris Saint-Germain maintained their perfect start to the season with a narrow victory over Brest, thanks to another moment of pure brilliance from Lionel Messi in the French capital.
Lionel Messi demonstrated why he is one of the world’s top players with a “crazy” assist in Paris Saint-1-0 Germain’s win over Brest on Saturday.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner set-up Neymar for PSG’s winner as Christophe Galtier’s side moved back to the top of Ligue 1 following Lens’ victory over Troyes on Friday. It was a crucial three points for the French giants as they continued their title defense, having won six of their first seven matches.
But it was Messi’s moment of brilliance that helped secure the victory. The Argentine jinked past a defender before flicking the pass over the Brest defense to Neymar, who brought it down brilliantly. After one touch, the winger slammed the ball into the far corner with his left foot.
The goal screamed excellence all around, with Messi picking up his sixth assist of the season in only six games. He has also contributed four goals in the process, as Messi continues to confound critics following a difficult debut season at the Parc de Princes.
Messi produced four vital passes, created two major chances, and finished three long passes in the first half against Brest. This includes the assist he provided for Neymar, who has had a fantastic start to the season, scoring 10 goals in all competitions.
Although Messi’s pass was superb, the finish, particularly the initial touch, should not be overlooked. Under intense pressure from the Brest defender, Neymar maintained his poise and quality in front of the goal, sending the shot into the bottom corner.
Despite this, Messi earned most of the accolades from supporters on Twitter. One fan called the assist “insane,” while others continued to refer to Messi as the “GOAT.”
“That Messi assist is insane,” one fan said.
“Ronaldo has literally never done this in his entire career,” another said. “If you don’t believe Messi > Ronaldo, any opinion you have on football is meaningless.”
According to one supporter: “Lionel Messi will never be replaced. Never.”
PSG will aim to maintain their perfect record in the Champions League group stage when they face Maccabi Haifa on Wednesday. Galtier’s men defeated Juventus 2-1 in their opening European game of the season, due to a first-half brace from Kylian Mbappe.
