Man Utd fans go wild after chief John Murtough gives four reasons for reaching agreement with former Man Utd flop
MANCHESTER UNITED is considering a surprise return for Memphis Depay as the summer transfer window closes.
Manchester United is reportedly interested in signing Memphis Depay, five and a half years after letting the Netherlands international go. Links have emerged somewhat unexpectedly, but it looks that the 28-year-return old’s to Old Trafford is now a genuine possibility. As a result, Express Sport will now look at the four reasons John Murtough will pursue the Netherlands international.
He’s inexpensive.
Depay was signed by Barcelona last summer after leaving Lyon.
He subsequently went on to become their joint-top striker, scoring 13 times in all competitions, the same number Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did after joining in January.
As a result, Depay is a steal at £8.5 million.
He was willing to break his contract in order to join Juventus, but even if United pays compensation for him, it will be a little one.
Bargains in modern football are hard to come by. Depay, with his enormous talent and goal-scoring instincts, is an excellent one.
He’s been to the club before.
United signed Depay in the 2015 summer transfer window, anticipating he would be the heir to Cristiano Ronaldo’s throne.
And, while things didn’t work out, his understanding of the Red Devils and how life is with them makes him an appealing signing.
Depay will not be intimidated by wearing the red shirt again since he has always believed in himself and his abilities.
He also won’t be frightened to come out in front of a sold-out Old Trafford, where fans from his previous stint will still be present.
That implies Depay should be able to acclimate to being back at the club with minimal effort.
Significantly improved
Another reason United is interested in Depay is that he is an entirely different player than the one they previously had.
Whereas the previous version of the forward was petulant and made some poor decisions both on and off the pitch, this iteration is a lot more mature and wise.
Depay grew as a player during his tenure with Lyon, eventually establishing himself as one of the best in French football.
And he was great for Barcelona last season, especially considering the fact that he had to replace Lionel Messi, which is no easy assignment.
Depay’s goal-scoring statistics have also improved, making him a more appealing option.
Fluidity
Depay is a modern forward, which means he can play anywhere in a front three.
He was once a winger throughout his career. However, he has since featured as a center-forward for both club and country, indicating that he is ideal for Erik ten Hag’s system.
Depay would be able to play with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, having previously played with the latter during his initial tenure at the club.
Anthony Elanga and Anthony Martial are also potential teammates for the former PSV Eindhoven player.
So there’s a fourth reason why United would be enticed by a deal, with speculation of a return gaining traction.
So far, United’s transfer window
So far this summer, United has signed four players.
Tyrell Malacia was the first to come, with the Dutch international arriving from Feyenoord after initially seeming set to join Lyon.
Christian Eriksen subsequently followed suit, leaving Brentford on a free transfer to join Manchester United.
Lisandro Martinez was United’s third acquisition, having turned down Arsenal’s approaches in order to play under Ten Hag again.
And Manchester United recently signed Casemiro from Real Madrid for a fee of £60 million.
